The largest number of rare paintings by historic artist Harlan Hubbard (KY/IN, 1900-1988) to be offered at auction will be sold on February 17, 2024, at Wickliff Auctioneers in Carmel, IN.
There are 20 works to be offered; 18 of which were originally from the estate of the artist, then bequeathed to Claude W “Bill” Caddell after the artist’s death, and the other two works having provenance back to the artist. The selection includes oil paintings, woodblock prints, watercolors, and six original pen-and-ink illustrations that were depicted in Hubbard’s book “Shantyboat, A River Way of Life”.
These 20 pieces were consigned to the auction by Flo Caddell, administrator of the estate of Bill Caddell, who passed away in June, 2023. Flo and Bill, husband and wife, authored the book, “The Watercolors of Harlan Hubbard”, which was published in 2021. One of the paintings depicted in that book is also included in the auction.
Very few of Hubbard’s paintings have ever been offered for public auction, and the majority of his works remain in private hands and municipal collections. Hanover College in Indiana, for example, has 31 pieces on permanent display in their Duggan Library, and featured in the exhibition, “Harlan Hubbard- Life as Art”, at the library in October of 2020.
The auction will be held live and online at the Wickliff Auctioneers’ gallery in Carmel, IN. In-person bidding is available, but seating is limited. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a seat. The auction catalogue is currently posted and is available for online bidding and preview at www.bidwickliff.com.
The auction will begin with a selection of fine jewelry and decorative arts at 11am Eastern, and the art session is estimated to begin approximately 2 hours later. Additional information is available via email at email@example.com.
