Wickliff Auctioneers is pleased to present the second session of the Harry A. Davis estate art on Saturday, October 18, featuring Harry’s paintings, as well as those executed by his wife, Lois. This auction is one of several to be conducted to sell the family’s collection of art, following Harry’s passing in 2006, and Lois’s relocation to Texas to live in a senior community near her son.
This auction includes many more of Harry’s iconic paintings of historic properties in Indiana, as well as several of his figurative drawings and paintings. Harry’s work and style varied by decades, beginning with his work in the 1930’s, which has been categorized by art critics as regionalist in style; capturing life in the Midwest. Through the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, Harry’s work evolved, and when he retired from teaching at the Herron Art School in 1983, he hit the ground running as a commercial artist, exhibiting his art all over Indiana and the Midwest, receiving broad acclaim for his style and execution, becoming the only artist in the history of the Hoosier Salon (begun 1925) to win the Best of Show award ten times.
“I believe that Harry’s art and career are as historically significant as the art and careers of the members of the Hoosier Group,” said Darin Lawson, President, Wickliff Auctioneers. Adding, “Early artists like William Forsyth (an early Herron instructor, and one of the five Hoosier Group artists) had a great impact on art in Indiana through their years as teachers, but Harry taught and painted longer, so his tenure exceeds Forsyth, and his art accomplishments can be argued to be as significant”.
The auction begins at 10am, with art anticipated to sell at approximately 2pm. A public, gallery preview is available on Friday, October 17, from 2pm until 7pm, and the catalogue of items is available on the auction house’s web site, www.wickliffauctioneers.com.
